# AI Billing Infrastructure: 7 Tests Before You Choose

An AI billing system has to turn variable product usage into a charge the customer can understand and finance can reconcile. A demo that shows only token counting misses the difficult parts: retries, changing models, prepaid balances, enterprise terms, and invoices.

Use these seven tests when evaluating billing infrastructure for an AI product. Run them with your own usage and pricing, not a vendor's sample account.

### 1. Can it ingest the events you actually produce?

Send input tokens, output tokens, cached tokens, API calls, or GPU time as separate billable events where your pricing needs that distinction. Each event should carry a stable customer or subscription reference and an ID that survives retries. In Lago, a metric code and `transaction_id` tie the event to aggregation and deduplication. Test missing, duplicate, late, and corrected usage. See the [usage metering workflow](https://getlago.com/platform/usage-metering).

### 2. Can pricing change without changing instrumentation?

Your product may start with a monthly fee, add included usage, then price model variants differently. Keep the raw usage event useful across those changes. Test a base subscription plus overages, a tiered rate, and a negotiated enterprise override against the same event stream. A billing platform should show the resulting charge before it becomes an invoice.

### 3. Are prepaid credits understandable?

Test paid credits, promotional grants, top-ups, expiry, and a failed payment. Customers need to see what is left; finance needs to distinguish cash received from usage delivered. Lago wallets support paid and granted credits, balance alerts, and automatic top-ups. Its premium ongoing balance estimates current usage and draft invoices, while the standard balance changes when invoices finalize. See [Credits & Spend Control](https://getlago.com/platform/credits).

### 4. Do access rules match the contract?

Try a customer who moves between plans or negotiates a higher allowance. Entitlements should tell your product what the customer can access. Billing alerts can signal a threshold, but your application must enforce a hard usage stop. Test the gap between a billing event arriving and a feature being gated. The [entitlements guide](https://getlago.com/glossary/entitlements) explains the access and allowance model.

### 5. Can a customer reconstruct an invoice?

Pick one invoice line and trace it back to the metric, events, rate, allowance, credits, and tax treatment that produced it. Then correct a bad event and see what changes. If support needs an engineer to explain every dispute, the system is not ready for scale. Lago combines subscription and usage charges on an invoice; test the exact format your finance team exports and your customer sees.

### 6. Does it fit your payment and finance stack?

Check the payment provider, currency, tax, accounting export, and webhook behavior you use today. Metering and pricing should not force an unnecessary migration of payment collection. Test payment failure, credit note, and reconciliation paths, not only a successful first charge.

### 7. Can your team operate it?

Ask who can inspect and change a price, how a release is rolled back, and what happens when ingestion or invoice generation fails. Validate event volume with your peak workload rather than an advertised maximum. Lago offers Cloud and self-hosted deployment, with open-source code that your engineers can inspect; each path has different operating responsibilities.

The strongest evaluation is one real customer scenario: send usage, change the contract, apply credits, generate an invoice, and explain every line. For a deeper treatment of pricing choices, read [AI Billing: The Complete Guide](https://getlago.com/blog/ai-billing-infrastructure).
