# AI tools for Lago

> Install the Lago plugin in Claude Code or Codex and get access to a Lago organization when you are ready to test.

Use Claude Code or Codex to explore Lago and build a billing integration. The [Lago plugin](https://github.com/getlago/lago-plugin) gives your agent an offline example and implementation guidance. You do not need a Lago account to start. When you are ready to check real usage, [get access to a Lago organization](#connect-to-lago-when-you-are-ready).

## Pick your agent

> [tab] Claude Code
>
> Run in Claude Code:
>
> ```text theme={"dark"}
> /plugin marketplace add getlago/lago-plugin
> /plugin install lago@lago-plugins
> ```
>
> Then ask: `/lago:implementation show me what Lago can do`

> [tab] Codex
>
> Run in your terminal:
>
> ```bash theme={"dark"}
> codex plugin marketplace add getlago/lago-plugin
> codex plugin add lago@lago-plugins
> ```
>
> Start a new Codex task, then ask: `$lago:implementation show me what Lago can do; do not assume this workspace is my application`

To add billing to an application, follow [Build Lago billing with a coding agent](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/ai-agents/coding-agents.md). It covers the repository work, local tests, CLI setup, and a check against Lago.

## Connect to Lago when you are ready

First, get access to the organization you will use:

* **Your team already uses Lago Cloud:** Ask your Lago organization admin for an invitation, accept it, and sign in. Confirm whether the organization is in the US or EU region.
* **You need a new Lago Cloud organization:** [Request access from Lago](https://getlago.com/book-a-demo). Lago's team sets up Cloud accounts; tell them which region you need and whether you are setting up a test integration.
* **You use self-hosted Lago:** [Deploy Lago](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/lago-self-hosted/overview.md) and sign up in its web app to create your organization, or ask your team's operator for access to an existing instance. Record the API service URL.

Once signed in to that organization, get its API key from **Developers → API keys**, or ask an admin to provide one. Keep it out of prompts and source control. Follow the [billing workflow](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/ai-agents/coding-agents.md) to connect the CLI and check usage.

Use the [Lago CLI](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/lago-cli/overview.md) or [product MCP server](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/ai-agents/mcp-server.md) to read or configure a real organization. These are separate from the plugin. Your application uses a [Lago SDK or the REST API](https://getlago.com/docs/developers) at runtime.

| Tool | What it gives your agent | Lago API key? |
| - | - | - |
| [Lago plugin](https://github.com/getlago/lago-plugin) | Guided billing examples and implementation instructions | No, for offline work |
| [Documentation MCP](https://docs.getlago.com/mcp) | Search of Lago's public docs | No |
| [Lago CLI](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/lago-cli/overview.md) | Terminal commands to inspect, configure, and verify a Lago organization | Yes, for live commands |
| [Product MCP](https://getlago.com/docs/guide/ai-agents/mcp-server.md) | Supported tools that access an organization's billing data | Yes |
| [SDK or REST API](https://getlago.com/docs/developers) | Your application's server-side billing integration | Yes |

The plugin does not bundle the CLI or either MCP connection. If you want your agent to look up exact event or pricing guidance while coding, add `https://docs.getlago.com/mcp` as a remote HTTP MCP server. It searches public docs and cannot read your organization's data.
