If you're looking for a billing provider, you'll quickly come across Zuora. It's a popular monetization platform that offers a variety of products, from payments to subscription management, billing and revenue recognition.
Zuora is designed to support complex billing needs and dvanced subscription capabilities as well as integration between a variety of finance tools. Zuora's biggest benefit is a large set of features and possible workflows. It helps large organizations transition to subscription-based models while managing multi-tiered pricing, revenue recognition, and complex subscription structures.
But Zuora also has its downsides. It's a strong solution for enterprises looking to scale and automate their subscription billing, but has its challenges. One is the typical problem with all-in-one SaaS (just like Stripe). Zuora started as a billing platform (just like Lago), but has since branched out into other categories (now offering 6 total products). It makes strategic sense, but also makes it hard to set up Zuora to do exactly what you want to.
Others report high pricing and a complex implementation process. This creates a barrier for companies without significant resources to invest in setup and training. Whether Zuora is the right solution also depends on the use case. While you can build usage-based billing (or other, more complex billing), it's not a core feature of Zuora. But companies with specific needs for usage and metering may encounter limitations, prompting them to explore alternative solutions.
If you're looking for alternatives to Zuora, here are a few:

Of course we'd say that, wouldn't we. You're on our website, after all. But we'll do our best to be honest when Lago is a good alternative to Zuora—and when it's not.
Lago (that’s us!) is open-source billing infrastructure tailored for businesses with complex, custom billing needs. We help customers ship new pricing and monetization quickly and without creating conflict between engineering and finance.
We're especially proud of niche features, where companies can set up postpaid, prepaid credits, and progressive billing options.
An important contrast ito Zuora is that we're open-source and specialize in billing, which makes Lago agnostic to payment processors and billing-adjacent applications. Instead of prioritizing our own features mean we integrate seamlessly with tools like Stripe, NetSuite, Salesforce, and Anrok, making Lago adaptable for various tech stacks.
Lago is ideal for companies with complex billing needs, for times when pricing and monetization have become so complex they're an engineering challenge. This makes it ideal for technical companies like DevTools, AI, infrastructure and similar companies that charge something more complex than a seat-based subscription.
Lago offers a free forever open-source product. Because pricing is extremely dependent on volume, hosting type and similar things. If you want to find out more, book a demo!

Some companies choose to build a custom billing system for complete control. While a homegrown solution allows for full customization, it comes with notable downsides, including high development costs, ongoing maintenance, and scalability challenges.
A homegrown billing system may be suitable for companies with unique billing requirements and the resources to support long-term development and maintenance.
Development costs vary significantly, often running into the tens of thousands for initial setup, plus ongoing maintenance expenses. The “cost of opportunity” of staffing engineering talent on a “non core” competency such as billing is also to be taken into account.
