What Is an AI Finance Assistant? (And How Is It Different from an AI Agent?)

An AI finance assistant is software that answers questions about a company's financial or billing data in plain language, instead of requiring someone to build a report, write a query, or navigate a dashboard to get the same answer. Ask it why revenue dropped, what a specific customer's invoice history looks like, or how churn compares across segments, and it returns an answer grounded in the underlying records, not a general-knowledge guess.
That's a narrower definition than most of what ranks for this term today. Search "AI financial assistant" and most of what comes back is personal finance: budgeting apps, a Medium post about someone's weekend project building a local assistant for their own spending, Intuit Assist helping consumers with taxes and cash flow. None of that is wrong, exactly, it's just a different problem than the one a finance or RevOps team at a company has. This piece is about the second thing, and about a distinction that gets blurred even within that world: the difference between an assistant and an agent.
Three capabilities show up in every real implementation. It answers natural-language questions over structured financial data (MRR, invoices, subscriptions, usage events) instead of requiring a BI tool or a request to the data team.
